Roof treatment in Seagrove, minutes from our door

Our base sits on US 220 between Asheboro and Seagrove. The middle of Seagrove is about 5 miles south, around a 10 minute drive. No town on our list is closer.

A Seagrove job begins with a no-cost roof assessment. The owner goes up the ladder himself and checks the shingles, the granules, how a shingle bends and every flashing. If the roof fits, we do a tune-up and spray on the rejuvenation treatment. If you'd like a rough number first, try the instant roof estimate from your kitchen table.

Seagrove sits at the south end of our map. Heading north, Asheboro is next, and Ramseur is off to the northeast.

Pottery country

Seagrove is small. The town had 235 people in the 2020 census. Its name travels a lot farther than that. More than 100 potteries work in and around Seagrove and the nearby towns of Robbins and Star. NC 705, the Pottery Highway, is a state scenic byway that runs south from here into Moore County. Parts of it follow the old Plank Road, which was started in 1849.

A few pieces of local history:

  • The town is named for railroad official Edwin G. Seagraves. Local accounts say a sign painter dropped the last letter to save space.
  • Trains served Seagrove until December 31, 1951. The old depot later became a pottery museum.
  • The North Carolina Pottery Center, on East Avenue, was established in 1998.
  • Nearby Jugtown Pottery dates to 1921, and the Original Owens Pottery to 1895.
  • The Seagrove Pottery Festival is held at Seagrove Elementary School the weekend before Thanksgiving. The separate Celebration of Seagrove Potters runs the same weekend at Historic Luck's Cannery. Luck's, the pinto bean company, closed that plant in 2002.

Wooded lots and roofs that stay damp

If your Seagrove home sits on a wooded lot, the trees are great for summer shade. They're hard on a roof in other ways.

Pine needles collect in valleys and behind chimneys. They hold water against the shingles long after a rain. Shaded slopes stay damp and grow algae and moss. Limbs that brush the roof in the wind scrub granules off. Each spring, pine pollen dusts roofs and gutters yellow. It washes away, but it's one more thing sitting in the valleys.

Two things to know before you call:

  • We don't kill algae or moss. Rejuvenation restores the shingle. Growth has to be cleaned off first. See algae and black streaks.
  • The roof has to be clear and dry. Debris in the valleys has to go before the treatment can soak in.

None of that rules your roof out. A shaded roof often takes less sun damage than an open one, so the shingles may be in better shape than you'd guess.

Timing a Seagrove job around the weather

APEX-1132 freezes at 32 degrees, so we apply it in mild, dry weather. It needs a dry roof and no rain until it cures. At 70 to 80 degrees, it fully cures in one to two hours.

That matters in pottery country, because fall is the busy season. The festival weekend before Thanksgiving lands late in the year, when cold nights start showing up. If you want your house or shop done before the holiday crowds, call early in the fall. Spring and early fall usually give us the most good days to work with. When you call, mention any branches resting on the roof. Those should be trimmed back before we treat.

On a rural lot, outbuildings count too. A detached garage or a shop with shingles can be added to the job if it qualifies. We price by square footage, and the cost page explains how extra roofs add up.

Pottery shops, showrooms and small buildings

If your pottery shop or showroom has an asphalt shingle roof, it can be treated just like a house. The tune-up covers shop roofs too: loose shingles, worn flashing seals and nail pops. We also treat church and small business roofs, as long as they're shingle. See churches and small commercial buildings.

Tell us about kiln openings or show weekends when you call, and we'll try to plan around them. Most roofs take an afternoon, and you can walk on the roof again in about an hour when it's warm out.

The treatment comes from soybean oil, and it breaks down naturally because it's biodegradable. It's also pH neutral, with little or no smell. That's good news if you've got gardens, pets or customers walking by.

Metal and flat roofs are out

This product only works on asphalt shingles. Metal, tile, slate and flat or membrane roofs aren't a fit. If your house is shingle and your shop is metal, we can still do the house.

Common questions

How close is Roof Armor to Seagrove?

Very close. Our base is on US 220 between Asheboro and Seagrove, about 5 miles from the middle of town. That's roughly a 10 minute drive, which makes Seagrove the shortest trip on our whole map.

Can you treat the roof on my pottery shop or showroom?

If it's asphalt shingle and in sound shape, yes. The process is the same as for a house: free assessment, tune-up, then treatment. A building with a metal roof is not a fit for this product. The assessment shows which of your buildings qualify.

My Seagrove house sits under tall pines. Is that a problem?

Not on its own. Shade can slow sun damage. But needles in the valleys and algae on shaded slopes have to be dealt with before treatment, since rejuvenation doesn't kill algae or moss. We look at both during the free assessment and tell you where you stand.
