How to spot a 3-tab roof
A 3-tab shingle is one flat layer with two slots cut into the bottom edge. That makes three tabs that look like separate shingles once they're on the roof. From the street you'll see neat, even rows with a flat look and no shadow lines.
They were the standard shingle for decades, so you'll find them on plenty of older homes around Asheboro and the rest of Randolph County. They're thinner and lighter than architectural shingles, with less asphalt in each one.
Why 3-tab shows its age sooner
Less asphalt means less to lose. When heat and sun dry out a thin shingle, it turns brittle faster than a thick one.
The tabs are the weak point. Each one is a flap held down mostly by a strip of sealant. As the shingle dries out, a few things happen:
- Corners start to curl up, or the edges cup
- The seal strip lets go, and tabs lift in the wind
- Stiff tabs crack or snap off when the wind flexes them
Some of that is fixable. Lifted tabs can be resealed as part of loose shingle repair. Hard curling is another story. Read more about curling shingles.
Still a candidate, or done?
| Item | Still a candidate | Probably done |
|---|---|---|
| Tabs | Flat, or lifted but able to reseal | Curled hard and won't lie down |
| Granules | Thinning, some in the gutters | Gone in patches, black mat showing |
| Cracks | None, or a few small ones | Cracked and snapped tabs across the roof |
| Missing tabs | None or very few | Many, with more gone after every storm |
| Deck | Solid underfoot | Soft or sagging |
| Inside the house | Dry | Leaks or water stains |
What treatment can do for a thin shingle
For a 3-tab roof that's still in decent shape, the main goal is flex. A tab that bends in a gust stays on the roof. A brittle one snaps.
That's why the bend test result matters most here. On SoyLei's data sheet, the aged untreated shingle failed a pliability test at 55°F, and the shingle treated with APEX-1132 passed. Better granule hold helps too, since thin shingles have less to spare.
What it won't do is flatten a tab that has already curled hard, or reattach a tab that has cracked off. So timing matters more with 3-tab than with thicker shingles. More on the numbers in our lab results.
After a windy storm
Wind is hard on 3-tab roofs. After a big blow, take five minutes for this.
- 01Walk the yard
Look for pieces of shingle in the grass or the flower beds. A tab on the ground means one is missing on the roof.
- 02Look up at the edges
Check for tabs that are lifted, folded back or sticking up at an angle from the rest of the row.
- 03Get it handled before the next one
A lifted tab that gets resealed soon has a good chance of staying put. One left flapping is more likely to tear off in the next storm.
Plenty of older 3-tab roofs still have good years left. Some don't. If yours is past it, we'll tell you, and the visit won't cost you anything.
Common questions
Can you rejuvenate 3-tab shingles?
Yes, if they're still sound. APEX-1132 is made for asphalt shingles, and 3-tab shingles are asphalt shingles. Because they're thinner, the window is shorter. The tabs need to lie flat or be resealable, with no bare mat and no soft decking.
Will rejuvenation flatten my curling shingles?
Don't count on it. Treatment helps a dry shingle stay flexible, but it isn't made to pull a curled tab back down. Slightly lifted tabs can often be resealed in the tune-up. Tabs that have curled hard usually mean the roof is near the end.
Should I treat my 3-tab roof or replace it?
If the tabs are flat, the granules are thinning but not gone, and nothing leaks, treatment is likely the better value. If tabs are curled, cracked or missing across the roof, it's time to talk to a roofer about replacement. Our rejuvenation vs. replacement page lays it out.
How do I know if my 3-tab roof is too far gone?
Walk around the house and look at the tab corners and the gutters. Hard curling, snapped tabs and bare black patches are bad signs. A few lifted tabs and some grit in the gutters are not. Book a free roof assessment and we'll give you a clear yes or no.
