I started out in numbers
Before the trades, I worked in finance and payments at a company called TSYS. I was a regional analyst by the time I was 19.
Then I left that desk job for the trades. On paper, it looked like a step backward.
That finance start never left me, though. I'm still a numbers and data guy. I want to see the math before I believe a sales pitch. That's how I picked the product I use today.
"I traded a couple hundred thousand dollars a year for $13 an hour and a tool belt."
Remodeling, then one trade done right
My first trade work was remodeling. Later I became a North Carolina Class B general contractor and took on a wide range of building jobs.
Doing a bit of everything taught me a lesson. The businesses that do well pick one niche trade and get very good at it.
So I built a fencing company here in Asheboro, Apex Fencing. It did one thing, and that was fences. It grew to a very good size. At the peak, we had eight crews out doing eight jobs a day. I sold it in January 2026.
One habit from those years carries over. I personally replied to nearly every review the fence company got. When my name is on the work, I answer for it.
Why roof rejuvenation
I picked roof rejuvenation because it's simple. One product. One kind of labor. The price is set by the roof's square footage. There aren't many moving parts, so it's easier to do right every time.
It makes sense for homeowners, too. A new roof around Asheboro often costs $20,000 to $25,000 or more. A treatment usually runs around 20% of that, and each one adds up to about 5 years to shingles that are aging but still sound. The roof rejuvenation cost page lays out the numbers.
I like the work. I help a sound roof last longer and put off a big bill. Here's how roof rejuvenation works, step by step.
Why I chose a product made by scientists
There's more than one roof rejuvenator out there. I wanted the one with real lab numbers behind it.
I chose APEX-1132, made by SoyLei in Ames, Iowa. SoyLei is a team of scientists. Their soy-based asphalt research goes back to 2008. They also make soy-based products for asphalt pavement used by transportation agencies.
The data sheet is what sold me. A few lines from it:
- Granule adhesion improved 50%. A leading competitor improved 17%.
- Tear strength retained was 86%, versus 70% for that competitor.
- Treated shingles passed the pliability test at 55°F. Untreated shingles failed.
- It was created by researchers from Iowa State University, and SoyLei names PRI Asphalt Technologies as the independent lab that tested it.
It's made from soybean oil, with 96% certified biobased content under the USDA BioPreferred program. Every number is on the lab results page.

How I work
Here's what you can expect when you call Roof Armor.
- 01I answer my own phone
Call (336) 523-0113 and you'll most likely get me. If I'm up on a roof, I'll call you back.
- 02I look at every roof myself
There's no salesperson. I do every free roof assessment in person.
- 03I tell you straight
If your roof is a good candidate, I'll say so. If it's past saving, I'll say that too. My business is rejuvenation and tune-ups, so I gain nothing by pushing a new roof.
- 04The tune-up is included
Before treatment, loose shingles get secured, flashings get resealed and nail pops get fixed. It's part of the job. More on the roof tune-up.
- 05Price and warranty up front
You'll know the price before any work starts. Each treatment comes with a 5-year transferable warranty, and I give you the written terms before work starts.
